INTRODUCTION & EXPERIENCE
The winding road follows the stream up this scenic historic valley bringing you back to the present moment before you arrive at our peaceful spot beside Takapu Stream. Take your time meandering up and you'll feel a change of focus and mood. Take a deep breath, you're now ready to spend time with your canine best mate - they will feel your mood lift & respond to it. We hope you enjoy the time.
Our river flat creates a large natural flat area to run, with a variety of terrain, & a couple of small swimming holes to explore along the stream (bring some raw meat if you’d like to try luring up a tame eel). If your dog has a scenting nose, there are heaps to occupy them - especially hunting through the flax/banks for rabbit smells & being a wolf. It’s super cool watching our dogs roam and explore freely.
Bring a coffee/picnic/thermos and find a quiet spot or picnic table for yourself beside the stream and just unwind. On a sunny day there are some idyllic private spots, esp in the bottom corner across the stream under the small bluff. Keep an eye out for wild mint, healthy watercress, & other stuff you're welcome to forage.
INFORMATION
LOCATION: 343 Takapu Road, Tawa, Wellington
**EXCESSIVE BARKING**: Dogs that constantly bark can’t be here. Some barking is understandable, but endless barking is not OK for neighbours and this space. Dog breeds can be different, if they're alone or herding mates, so there are options. We'll send you some tips on booking. This is important.
**STOCK SAFETY**: There won't be stock in the dog park unless the gate was left open. We do farm, so as a bonus our beautiful Speckle Park steers like to visit the carpark area but they’re placid, inquisitive and safe. Walking towards them, or driving slowly forward, will push them away (esp if you try to pat them. Or raise your arms or make a tssh tssh tssh sound). They’re cool animals to just hang out near in their own right and guests enjoy meeting them.
Across the road are horses, if your dog reacts badly to these you can’t be here, I don’t want neighbours losing sleep. I reserve the right to ask anyone to leave if we get complaints. Pitbull types or aggressive dogs aren’t very appropriate here. If unsure, use a long lead initially (or some use a muzzle) and monitor your dog as they become familiar here. NZ law is super clear about dogs worrying stock. I wouldn’t want anyone to be in this position.
* FENCING: standard 8 wire stock fencing and forms the perfect natural play area. Good for most dogs, but keep a long lead on if you have doubts.
* PARKING: park INSIDE our road gate to the left, off the driveway. Leads must be on before exiting the vehicle until you're inside the paddock. Be stock safe. Ideally only 1 car, 2 at most.
* CATTLE: we very rarely put the cattle in to trim the grass, so there may be a bit of cattle pooh about sometimes. Most dogs love this (& many use it as a probiotic for gut health), but the stream is handy for a wash if they get overly happy!
* CELL COVERAGE: Coverage at our location, blackspot in lower valley.
* SAFE TIME BUFFER: No need to worry about meeting other dogs when leaving because we have a minimum 30-minute buffer period between bookings to remove this risk. So please use all your time. Please don't come early and wait.
* NATURE CALLING: Sometimes you just need to go - all the water flowing past, or a cool day. So you're welcome to do human ‘bush’ wee's if urgent, but if it's discrete, not in the river or where others would stand. Definitely no human waste or number 2's unless you can bag it yourself lol.
* WINTER: Bring outdoor footwear like gumboots. It’s not very muddy but water can pool after rain. Emergency large umbrellas on fence by poo bin if you get caught in a shower.
* RURAL-NESS: it is a working rural valley so you will hear pest control or target shooting, or even see distant hunters from time to time. Fully normal.
* PHOTOS: We're happy for you to take photos to share. Please consider our privacy, or content against the spirit of our place.
* FORAGING: Fill your boots. There's wild mint, healthy watercress, and other things to find, so have a pick and leave some for others.
* CHILDREN: Kids love it here, and in summer bring their togs for a paddle. Please be water safe.
* DAWN/DUSK: our valley waking & going to sleep are the best times. Scents hang near the ground, the breeze slows, roosters call, it’s peaceful. Limit barking at these times, for your experience, but also for our neighbours.
* SMELLS: Rabbits live in the area and leave scent trails, so you're likely to see your dog(s) excitedly enjoy following their trails with nose to ground, esp if you're here in the morning.
* HELP US IMPROVE: Please let us know, we love to improve. If there's any issue when you're here, please don't hesitate to call us. If we're home we can pop down if needed.
* SHARING: as we leave you in peace, we miss the fun. Sharing or tagging photos/videos to our FB page “Goodwood Private Dog Park” or IG creates a lot of enjoyment for us.
* FOLLOW & LIKE us for updates & Tag: ‘Goodwood Private Dog Park’ on FB, or Goodwood Dogs on Instagram. Please review us on Google (https://maps.app.goo.gl/W5qQX6Z7jMozTHUe7).
We're providing this facility having recently learned how many dogs and people don't feel safe, or have been traumatised, in public dog areas. Please respect sharing our space and be mindful of my neighbours. Fortunately, most dog people are decent folk and we're keen to support them. If there's anything we can do to improve or add to help, we're all ears, please let us know. Thank you, Enjoy!
RULES
1. Dogs must be leashed between vehicle parking and the dog park.
2. No excessive continuous barking
3. Pick up after your dogs. Leave the park clean. Poo bin & scoop at gate. Everyone can miss a poo, so please consider ‘pay-it-forward 101% picks ups’ in case
4. Stock safety is important. No chasing stock.
5. Make sure the area is safe and secure before bringing your dog in.
6. Never arrive early and wait in the carpark & never leave late. Separation between bookings is very important, esp. for reactive dogs.
7. Don’t allow cattle to exit road gate! Push them back first if they’re nearby - see tips above. Very important in winter with less food inside the gate!
HAZARDS
Common sense please. It’s a normal uncontrolled rural space we provide, so we aren’t responsible for accidents to you or your dog.
There is a stream, so please make sure to practice dog and human water safety around the stream and swimming holes, especially if you have children with you. If the stream is in flood due to heavy rain please be cautious as it could be swift flowing. Where the river goes under our boundary fence there is a flood flap - a moveable item to stop the fence washing away. It's pretty good but not a perfect seal to stop a determined dog, so be mindful if you have little recall control. Any doubts, put a long lead on.
There is an electric fence on the boundary. You’re welcome to turn this off (by road gate) but turn on again when leaving (watch out for the hot wires protecting the unit).
FENCE DETAILS:
Good quality new 8-9 wire farm stock fence around perimeter and the road verge boundary is double fenced with mesh for extra separation from road users. In most cases this will be perfectly adequate for your dog, but please be mindful this is a normal farm fence not a high maximum-security prison fence - we couldn’t afford that for such a large area, and it wouldn’t suit the location. You still need to have recall of your dog or if unsure use a long lead to first visit.

No Other Dogs, No Other People. Tawa, Wellington.

No Other Dogs, No Other People. Tawa, Wellington.

No Other Dogs, No Other People. Tawa, Wellington.

Takapu valley's a quiet hidden rural gem just off SH1 at Tawa, only 15mins from Wellington CBD - a secret spot not many know.
If your dog has a scenting nose, there is heaps to occupy them - especially hunting through the flax/banks for rabbit smells & being a wolf. It’s super cool watching our dogs roam and explore freely.
Maybe bring a picnic/thermos and find a quiet spot or picnic table for yourself beside the stream and just unwind. On a sunny day there are some idyllic private spots, esp in the bottom corner across the stream under the small bluff. Keep an eye out for wild mint, healthy watercress, & other stuff you're welcome to forage.
**STOCK SAFETY**: There won't intentionally be stock in the dog area unless the gate was left open (they pounce on the grass there). We do farm, so as a bonus our beautiful Speckle Park steers like to visit the carpark area but they’re placid, inquisitive and very safe. Walking towards them, or driving slowly forward, will push them away (esp if you raise your arms or make a tssh tssh tssh sound). They’re cool animals to just hang out near in their own right. You probably won’t see our sheep, they're extra chicken.
Across the road are horses, if your dog reacts to these you can’t be here in a rural space either, I don’t want my neighbours loosing sleep. I reserve the right to ask anyone to leave if we get complaints. Pitbull types or aggressive dogs aren’t very appropriate here. If unsure, use a long lead initially (or some put muzzles on) and monitor your dog as they become familiar here. NZ law is super clear about dogs worrying stock. I wouldn’t want anyone to be in this position.
* FOLLOW & LIKE us for updates & Tag: ‘Goodwood Private Dog Park’ on FB, or Goodwood_Dogs in Instagram.
* FENCING: standard 8 wire stock fencing and forms the perfect natural play area. Good for most dogs, but keep a long lead on if you have doubts.
* PARKING: park INSIDE our road gate to the left, off the driveway. Leads must be on before exiting vehicle until you're inside the paddock. Be stock safe. Ideally only 1 car, 2 at most.
* CATTLE: we very rarely put the cattle in to trim the grass, so there may be a bit of cattle pooh about sometimes. Most dogs love this (& many use as a probiotic for gut health), but the stream is handy for a wash if they get overly happy!
* CELL COVERAGE: Coverage at our location, blackspot in lower valley.
* SAFE TIME BUFFER: No need to worry about meeting other dogs when leaving because we have a minimum 30 minute buffer period between bookings to remove this risk. So please use all your time. Please don't come early and wait.
* FIRST VISIT information is sent by email before your visit with all the info you'll need.
We're providing this facility having recently learned how many dogs and people don't feel safe, or have been traumatised, in public dog areas. Please respect sharing our space and be mindful of my neighbours. Fortunately most dog people are decent folk and we're keen to support. If there's anything we can do to improve or add to help, we're all ears, please let us know. Thank you, Enjoy!

No Other Dogs, No Other People. Tawa, Wellington.

No Other Dogs, No Other People. Tawa, Wellington.

RULES

What a fantastic place to give the dogs an adventure and private and fully fenced so no stress for our reactive boy! Our two dogs loved the different areas to explore. Thank you for providing such a valuable space.

We have visited this private dog park several
Times and I am continually impressed by the manaakitanga the host demonstrates! Every time we visit there is a new development. Today we very much enjoyed and were impressed by the scaping of the upper bank area that’s made it way more explorable, the lovely little bench at the top with the coffee cup holder, and the photo stand.
The host is also incredibly responsive and clearly cares about the community’s concerns. I recently let them know about a hole under a fence into a bush area my dog is very interested in I thought she could squeeze thru if I wasn’t watching closely and today we found they had opened up that area and popped a picnic table in with a little leash hook! I also hadn’t been for a while because I found the sniff spot membership restrictively expensive so was absolutely delighted to find they’d actually identified that and now offer bookings via multiple methods that are far more affordable for those of us with more limited income.
Honestly SO grateful for this space and the oodles of work and care clearly put in. Thanks and see you soon!
